Romania's Tourism Booms, Surpassing EU Averages and Pre-Pandemic Levels
Romania's tourism sector has been flourishing, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and EU averages. Bucharest's average daily rate (ADR) growth has outpaced other European capitals, and Romania has seen a significant increase in tourism spending over the last decade. The country's hotel market reached a record of over 25 million overnight stays in 2024.
The growth in Romania's tourism sector has been driven by an increase in foreign tourists and demand for modern hotels. Domestic tourists and the leisure sector are the main drivers of this growth. Business travel spending per trip in Romania grew by 134% between 2013 and 2023, above the EU average. The average daily rate for 4 and 5-star hotels in Bucharest affiliated with international brands exceeded 2019 levels, reaching over EUR 140 per night.
Several international hotel brands have invested in Romania in recent years, leading to increased interest in the country as a tourist destination. Marriott International, Hilton, Accor, and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) have all made significant investments, improving the country's infrastructure and expanding the range of high-quality accommodations available.
Romania's accession to the Schengen area in 2025 is expected to further boost tourist inflows, reinforcing the country's tourism potential. With over 25 million overnight stays in 2024, Romania's hotel market is thriving, and significant investments in new hotels continue to strengthen the sector.
