Romania extends the price cap for essential food products until the end of September

In a bid to protect consumer purchasing power and ensure food security amid inflationary pressures, the Romanian Government has extended the commercial markup cap for basic foods until September 30, 2025. This decision, outlined in Government Emergency Ordinance No. 67/2023, aims to regulate the prices of essential goods and safeguard the interests of consumers.

The extended duration of the commercial markup cap specifies that the commercial markup applied by processors cannot exceed 20% of the production cost, the cumulative markup throughout the distribution chain is capped at 5% of the purchase price plus operational expenses, and the markup by merchants at retail is also capped at 20% of the purchase price including expenses and rebates.

These caps apply to all goods, not just specific products, and the merchant's commercial markup includes direct and indirect expenses. It is important to note that the merchant's commercial markup does not exceed the cumulative commercial markup cap of 5% throughout the distribution chain.

The extension of the commercial markup cap is not exclusive to the merchant's commercial markup. The processor's commercial markup rate is also capped at a maximum of 20% compared to the production cost of the product. The merchant's commercial markup is not exempt from these provisions, and it is not subject to any further additions or subtractions.

The extension of the commercial markup cap for basic foods was reported by Digi24 and published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The draft emergency ordinance, which details the extension, was published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as well.

This extension is part of the Government's efforts to maintain price stability and promote fair pricing for essential goods, providing consumers with a more predictable and affordable market during these challenging economic times.

In light of the extended commercial markup cap for basic foods, the Romanian Government is regulating the prices of essential goods across various industries, including finance and business. The caps on the commercial markup applied by processors, throughout the distribution chain, and at the retail level ensure that prices remain fair and affordable for consumers.
