Robinhood Acquires Bitstamp, World's Oldest Crypto Exchange, for $200M
Robinhood Markets has made a significant move in the cryptocurrency sphere, acquiring Bitstamp, the world's longest-running cryptocurrency exchange, for $200 million. The deal, announced on Monday, is Robinhood's largest acquisition to date and a major step in its international expansion plans.
Founded in 2011, Bitstamp has built a reputation as one of the most trusted names in crypto trading. With this acquisition, Robinhood gains its first institutional crypto business, along with over 50 global crypto licenses, a ready-made institutional client base, and new infrastructure for lending, staking, and 'crypto as a service'.
Bitstamp's extensive licensing portfolio provides Robinhood with immediate access to customers across the EU, UK, and Asia. The integration will focus on combining Robinhood's user experience innovations with Bitstamp's institutional-grade infrastructure and global compliance capabilities. Bitstamp will continue operating under its existing brand and structure, ensuring the same level of service, security, and reliability for its users.
The acquisition, first announced in June 2024, significantly accelerates Robinhood's international expansion plans. By bringing Bitstamp into its ecosystem, Robinhood gains a wealth of experience, resources, and customers, strengthening its position in the global cryptocurrency market.
