Rising Costs in Erfurt: Growing Discontent Over Increasing Prices

Starting July 1st, 2025, **Erfurt has announced an increase in its parking fees**[1], marking a shift in the city's approach to managing urban space. This change will see paid parking costing around **5.00 EUR per day per car**[1], with the new rate likely to serve as a baseline for parking fees across the city.

The **reason behind the increase** is rooted in a broader urban policy aimed at recognising the value of public space dedicated to cars. The city hopes that by charging for parking, it can encourage a shift away from excessive car use and towards smarter, safer, and more sustainable urban environments[2].

In practical terms, this means that parking garages at popular locations such as Domplatz, Hauptbahnhof, Forum 1, Hirschgarten, and Stadion will see an increase in their rates. Short-term parking rates will rise from 2.00 EUR to 2.50 EUR per hour, while the daily rate for parking will increase from 12.00 EUR to 15.00 EUR[3]. However, the Stadion parking garage will remain at its current daily rate of 10.00 EUR[4].

The evening tariff in the Domplatz and Hauptbahnhof parking garages will remain available for a flat rate of five Euros between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM and until 7:00 AM the next day[5]. This concession aims to accommodate those who visit the city in the evenings for leisure activities such as cinema, shopping, or a park walk.

While the past parking experience was not always joyful, with the challenges of finding one's car among many others and the inconvenience of parking tickets and register stamps[6], the city is hopeful that the new rates will encourage a more considerate and sustainable approach to parking.

It's worth noting that the city attributes the parking fee increase to "increased operating and maintenance costs"[7]. Those who wish to park nearby Erfurt's amenities will have to accept the new parking rates or consider switching to the EVG fleet, which has recently undergone some updates[8].

The increase in parking fees serves as a reflection of Erfurt's broader urban policy focusing on recognizing the value of public space dedicated to cars, which is aimed at promoting a shift towards smarter, safer, and more sustainable urban lifestyles. This policy may influence the finance sector, as businesses operating in Erfurt might need to factor in the higher parking costs in their budget.
