Riga City Council Launches €600K Initiative to Revitalise Empty Brīvības Street Ground Floors
Riga City Council has launched an initiative to revitalise empty ground floors along Brīvības Street. The programme aims to support entrepreneurs with renovation and floor decor costs, ranging from €5,000 to €10,000. However, the Latvian Real Estate Business Association (LANĪDA) has expressed doubts about the programme's success.
The council plans to allocate 200,000 euros annually for three years to fund the initiative. Entrepreneurs, while welcoming the support, believe it is late and insufficient due to changed shopping habits and delays in normative acts. The municipality also plans to offer co-financing for events to boost foot traffic, with the programme's success to be assessed after several years.
The binding rules for the support programme are currently being compiled and will soon be submitted to the Council for approval. Meanwhile, empty ground floors of buildings along Brīvības Street continue to increase, with signs of former shops and cafes still visible.
