REVAMP Project Launches to Boost German Battery Reuse

The REVAMP project, launched in February 2023, has kicked off with a mission to boost the use of second-life and second-use batteries plus in Germany. Led by MAN Truck & Bus and backed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK), this three-year initiative aims to revolutionise battery life. REVAMP, involving nine industry and science partners, is developing a digital twin to trace the entire battery life cycle. The project, supervised by VDI/VDE-IT, is divided into eleven work packages, each tackling a specific aspect of battery reuse. One key goal is to automate the assessment of used vehicle car batteries, determining their suitability for economic reconditioning. This process, if successful, could significantly increase the lifespan of batteries, reducing waste and costs. Batteries can then be reused in their original vehicles (second-use) or repurposed for other applications (second-life). With a duration of three years, the REVAMP project, involving companies like ABO Asphalt-Bau Oeynhausen, Eibel Bau GmbH, and Schwartz Bauunternehmen GmbH, seeks to transform the battery landscape. By increasing the use of second-life and second-use batteries plus, it aims to foster a more sustainable and efficient future for the German automotive industry.
