Retail complex in Portimão set to commence operations
In a statement, the promoters of the Nova Vila Retail Park—a project masterminded by Belgian real estate fund manager Mitiska REIM—reveal plans for a retail complex spanning eight hectares, integrating 16 stores. The complex, located near National Road 125, approximately three kilometers from Portimão, will prioritize sustainability. It is slated to revolutionize the Algarve region, featuring international brands not yet present in the south of the country.
The new shopping establishment, set to replace the old Portimão Retail Park destroyed by fire in 2012, will create over 200 direct, non-seasonal employment positions, according to Enzo Guidez, responsible for Mitiska REIM's operations in Portugal. Additionally, the complex includes a gastronomic area, leisure spaces, bicycle parking, electric vehicle charging stations, a gas station, and free parking for 832 vehicles.
Enzo Guidez also notes that the project places a strong emphasis on sustainability, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. To that end, the promoters have installed photovoltaic panels on the roof, implemented a lighting control system, and opted for drought-resistant native plants and rainwater irrigation to bolster the project's environmental resilience.
Mitiska REIM explains that the chosen name Nova Vila Retail Park pays homage to Portimão's 15th-century name, Vila Nova de Portimão, known for its simple white architecture. The retail park is scheduled to open on Thursday.
Sustainability measures commonly applied in retail parks include energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation, waste management, green spaces, and the use of sustainable materials. To date, specific details regarding Nova Vila Retail Park's sustainability measures have not been disclosed and will likely become available upon the park's opening.
