Rems-Murr-Ost Alb Region Tackles Food Waste with Bio-Model

The Rems-Murr-Ost Alb region is tackling food waste in catering with its Bio-Model, focusing on sustainable, regional, and seasonal supply chains. The State Center for Nutrition Baden-Württemberg supports this with statewide waste weeks. Meanwhile, Alfred Kärcher SE & Co. KG is actively reducing food waste, becoming the first company to earn four GreenCanteen labels in 2022.

The Bio-Model encourages cooperation among stakeholders to reduce food waste and promote environmental goals. It aims to educate consumers and optimize portion sizes. The state government has provided support with the Administrative Regulation Canteen, and around 40 facilities measure their waste annually.

Kärcher, committed to sustainability, has switched to regional suppliers and values species-appropriate husbandry. The company regularly conducts waste measurements and signed the Out-of-House Catering declaration in 2022. Nationally, over ten million tons of food are wasted yearly, with almost 20 percent coming from out-of-home catering.

The Rems-Murr-Ost Alb region's Bio-Model, supported by the state government and companies like Kärcher, is making strides in reducing food waste. By promoting sustainable practices and consumer education, they aim to minimize the significant environmental impact of wasted food.
