Reliance Jio and Airtel, led by Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal respectively, have abandoned the Rs 249 mobile plan. Here are alternative options and additional offers to consider.
In a move that could potentially impact a significant number of prepaid users in India, Sunil Bharti Mittal's Airtel has discontinued its Rs 249 prepaid recharge plan. This decision comes shortly after Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio made a similar move to discontinue its Rs 249 plan.
The discontinued Airtel plan offered daily high-speed internet, unlimited calls, and 100 SMS messages per day, making it a popular choice among budget users. However, with the discontinuation, users now have to opt for the Rs 299 plan to enjoy similar benefits.
The Rs 299 Airtel plan offers a total of 3 GB data (not daily) with 28 days validity, unlimited calling, and 100 SMS per day. While this plan provides more data, it might be considered expensive by some users. For those who find the Rs 299 plan too expensive, the Rs 219 Airtel recharge plan could be an option.
The Airtel Thanks app shows that the Rs 249 recharged plan has been discontinued and reflects a "Price revised" note. This move may be part of a larger strategy by Airtel to adjust its pricing and offerings in the competitive Indian telecom market.
The decision by both Airtel and Reliance Jio to discontinue their low-cost plans could significantly impact budget users in India. With the discontinuation of the Rs 249 plan, prepaid recharge plans now begin at or above Rs 319, as Airtel has withdrawn the Rs 249 plan offering 1GB/day data.
Moreover, telecom rates may increase by 15% by late 2025, according to recent predictions. This could further squeeze the budget of prepaid users who rely on affordable data and calling plans.
Airtel has partnered with Perplexity, an AI startup, to offer a 12-month Perplexity Pro subscription worth Rs. 17,000 as part of the Rs 299 plan. This addition could potentially offset some of the increased costs for users.
Mukesh Ambani is associated with Reliance Jio, and Sunil Bharti Mittal is associated with Airtel. The moves by these two major telecom players will undoubtedly reshape the Indian telecom market and challenge users to adapt to new pricing structures.
