Recruitment Efforts of SWO Mobil Widen - Electronic Buses Serving as Moving Job Advertisements

In the city of Osnabrück, electric buses are not just a means of public transportation, but also moving job advertisements. As part of a comprehensive recruitment campaign by SWO Mobil, the local public transport operator's daughter company, ten electric articulated buses now sport a special "We are looking for bus drivers" rear decal.

The recruitment campaign, which has been ongoing for several months, is a response to the shortage of bus drivers in the transportation industry. SWO Mobil's co-managing director, Tanja Stiegeler, hopes that the use of electric bus rear surfaces for advertising will provide another boost to the recruitment effort, attracting potential candidates and sparking curiosity about a career as a bus driver.

André Kränzke, Managing Director of SWO Mobil, shares Stiegeler's optimism. He believes that the aim of the recruitment campaign is to create attention and encourage potential candidates to consider a career with SWO Mobil. The success of the campaign is attributed to its creative and attention-grabbing approach.

The recruitment efforts have reported initial successes, with 20 new colleagues having started their training at the local public transport driving school since the beginning of the year. Six new apprentices will start their training as vehicle operation specialists on August 1st. The campaign has also attracted many career changers.

However, the effectiveness of moving job ads, such as those displayed on electric buses, is not solely dependent on their visibility. According to driver recruitment insights, relying solely on ads—even mobile ones—may not suffice. Employers should combine them with quick follow-ups, clear and consistent communication, and multiple engagement methods to convert interest into hires.

Keeping candidate momentum with regular updates and transparent timelines enhances the chances that initial interest from ads translates into actual applications and hires. Given the shifting demographics and the broader labor market context, moving ads can serve as a strong awareness and branding mechanism, but this likely must complement strategies that build trust, standardize response quality, and create tailored communications for diverse candidate groups.

Stiegeler emphasizes that SWO Mobil's modern electric articulated buses are ideal ambassadors for an attractive and sustainable public transport system, including the job of a bus driver. The retirement of "baby boomers" by 2030 is expected to result in half of SWO Mobil's driving staff leaving, equivalent to around 200 full-time positions. The recruitment campaign is part of a broader effort to address this impending shortage.

All 62 electric articulated buses in the SWO Mobil fleet are available for advertising space rental. The recruitment efforts are ongoing and aim to continue addressing the shortage of bus drivers. While moving job ads on electric buses have the advantage of visibility and local targeting amid skills shortages, their effectiveness is maximized when combined with strategic recruitment practices such as consistent communication, fast follow-up, and candidate engagement throughout the hiring process. They are most effective as part of a multi-channel, well-managed driver recruitment approach rather than in isolation.
