Recruited by Latham: Eversheds Asia's Technology Leader, Steven Ma, Joins Latham's Ranks in Hong Kong
Rhys McWhirter, a seasoned legal professional with extensive experience in advising on business-critical technology-driven transactions, has joined Latham & Watkins as a partner in their Hong Kong office.
McWhirter's practice encompasses a broad range of areas, including commercial transactions, intellectual property, data privacy, and artificial intelligence matters. His senior expertise and skills are expected to further enhance Latham & Watkins' regional team.
Posit Laohaphan, the managing partner of Latham & Watkins' Asia offices, has welcomed McWhirter's appointment, stating that it is a strengthening of their Asia technology practice. The move also increases the number of partners in their Hong Kong office to 21.
Ghaith Mahmood, global chair of Latham & Watkins' data and technology transactions practice, expressed his enthusiasm about McWhirter's appointment. Mahmood described McWhirter as having a stellar reputation for advising on transformational technology-driven projects.
McWhirter spent three years as an in-house counsel at Westpac before serving as the head of technology and data for Asia at Eversheds Sutherland. Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland in 2019, he worked with PwC in Sydney and Hong Kong. Before that, he had earlier stints at Australian firms Gilbert + Tobin and Herbert Geer, although information about who worked at Herbert Geer in Australia before McWhirter moved to Eversheds Sutherland could not be found.
McWhirter's client base includes multinationals, tech companies, regulatory bodies, and financial institutions from various sectors such as technology, financial services, infrastructure, mining, and aviation. With over 13 years of experience in technology law, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Latham & Watkins.
McWhirter's appointment is expected to significantly contribute to Latham & Watkins' growth and success in the Asia region.
