The iconic Boulevard Unter den Linden in Berlin-Mitte is undergoing a significant transformation, with the goal of reducing motorized individual traffic and creating more space for other road users. The traffic administration has presented several ideas for how the boulevard could look in the future, with Paris serving as the model for this comprehensive redesign.

Currently, the road surface of the boulevard is being resurfaced, with the new markings still pending. In the first phase of the redesign, a short-term redistribution of street space has been implemented. Four meters of the carriageway were newly asphalted as part of the U5 construction, and the remaining meters have been renewed in the past months.

The new driving lanes will be applied next on the Boulevard Unter den Linden. Cyclists and buses will each have their own lane, while the car lanes will be reduced from two to one. This change aims to prioritize the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation users, making the boulevard more accessible and safe for everyone.

The second phase of the redesign focuses on a comprehensive redesign of the boulevard, whose shape is still completely open and where citizens can contribute their ideas. The development of the street Unter den Linden will take place under broad public participation in this phase. The suggestions of the participants in the participation process and wishes for the reorganization of traffic flows between the Humboldt Forum and the Brandenburg Gate will be collected and evaluated for further planning.

The city of Paris is currently renovating the Champs-Élysées, taking similar steps as part of the project on the Boulevard Unter den Linden in Berlin. Several long-term scenarios for the street Unter den Linden have been proposed, including models that widen both the sidewalk and the median strip up to the planting of a new row of trees.

However, not everyone is happy with the plans. Overdimensioned: Alliance has criticized bridge construction plans in Mitte. More projects in Mitte, such as the renovation of Torstraße and the new mobility concept for Kantstraße, are underway.

The goal of the project is clear: to make the Boulevard Unter den Linden a more welcoming and sustainable space for all. Whether it will become a completely car-free boulevard remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the future of this historic Berlin street is being shaped by the community and the need for change.
