Disruptions and construction works have been a common occurrence for train commuters in the Greater Stuttgart region. Soon, the S-Bahn service within the city center will experience another prolonged shutdown for several weeks.

In the heart of summer, commuters in Stuttgart are bracing for another round of disruptions as a major control and safety system installation on the tunnel route closes the Stuttgart S-Bahn's main line for several weeks. The construction work, part of the digitization of the Stuttgart railway junction, is set to begin on July 26 and continue until September 6.

During this period, some stations will not be served due to detours on the S-Bahn, and not all regional and long-distance trains can stop at Hauptbahnhof. As a result, approximately 350,000 daily passengers will face a less frequent S-Bahn timetable, fewer served stations, and the need to switch to replacement transport.

DB, the German railway company, is offering a replacement service with regional trains running hourly between Hauptbahnhof and Böblingen, and also stopping in Vaihingen. Additionally, between Hauptbahnhof and Vaihingen, replacement buses will run, serving all the S-Bahn stations along the main line at least every ten minutes, and every five minutes during peak hours.

Unfortunately, specific information about alternative transport options for commuters during this closure was not available for the summer of 2020. However, in similar situations, commuters might rely on strengthened bus schedules, car sharing and carpooling services, promoting the use of bicycles and walking for shorter distances, utilising existing tram networks and other local public transport options, and temporary measures such as free shuttle services or expanded public transport routes. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it would be best to consult local transport authorities or news sources from that time.

Long-distance and regional traffic is also affected due to the construction work. Some long-distance trains will not stop in Stuttgart but will instead stop in Esslingen am Neckar. At Hauptbahnhof, S-Bahn trains will end in the above-ground section, requiring passengers to plan for longer walks to buses and the U-Bahn. On the sections that the S-Bahn continues to serve, trains will run only every half hour.

Trains on line MEX 17 (Stuttgart-Pforzheim) will start and end in Bietigheim-Bissingen, except for a few exceptions. In regional traffic, trains on line MEX 18 (Tübingen-Osterburken) will run directly from Esslingen am Neckar to Ludwigsburg, bypassing Stuttgart. No trains will run on the tunnel route between Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof and Vaihingen during this period. Several stations will not be served during this time, including Hauptbahnhof (deep), Stadtmitte, Feuersee, Schwabstraße, Universität, and Österfeld.

Lines MEX 19 (Stuttgart-Gaildorf) and MEX 90 (Stuttgart-Schwäbisch Hall) will start and end mainly in Winnenden and Backnang. A special city train line will be set up to bring concertgoers from the city to the Iron Maiden concert on the Cannstatter Wasen.
