Railway line construction between Halle/Leipzig and Berlin: adjustments in long-distance and local transport services
The Deutsche Bahn has announced significant changes to long-distance train services in the eastern part of Germany, as construction work on the "Anhalter Bahn" Halle/Leipzig - Berlin in the Bitterfeld - Berlin section is set to take place from September 24 to December 13, 2025.
During this period, the Bitterfeld junction will be closed from October 10, 2025 (10 PM) to October 13, 2025 (4 AM). This closure will result in a total shutdown of the route, and long-distance trains will be extensively rerouted. Stops in Bitterfeld will be suspended for both long-distance and local traffic during this time.
Travellers can expect delays of 45 to 60 minutes between Halle (Saale) and Leipzig and Berlin, as well as a reduced service on some routes. Only a two-hourly service will be available towards Erfurt and Nuremberg, and onwards to Munich. The axis from Halle (Saale) towards Hannover, Magdeburg, or Leipzig/Dresden will not be affected.
Long-distance trains will be diverted via Güsten station during the construction work before continuing to Halle. Additionally, there will be no direct connections towards Eisenach, Fulda, and Frankfurt am Main. Long-distance trains will not serve the stops at Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Berlin Südkreuz during the construction work.
A replacement service will be established between Wolfen/Bitterfeld and Leipzig Messe/Halle (Saale) during the Bitterfeld junction closure. For the S-Bahn line S8, a hourly replacement service will be established between Bitterfeld and Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
Travellers can find timetable data for the changed connections in various information media. It is worth noting that between Berlin and Munich, long-distance trains will run at least hourly. An unrestricted offer via Kassel will be available between Frankfurt and Berlin during the construction work.
Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and check the latest information before travelling during the construction period. The Deutsche Bahn apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks passengers for their understanding.
