Railway Developments Remain Unattended
Berlin witnesses slow progress on upcoming tram line projects, according to the city's transport administration. Replies to a written inquiry by Tino Schopf, transport spokesman for the SPD fraction, reveal plans for new lines in various districts over the coming years.
The planning process for a 1.7-kilometer new line from Hultschiner Damm to Mahlsdorf (Marzahn-Hellersdorf) is expected to begin. This line is projected to become operational by 2028.
The 3.8-kilometer Turmstraße - Jungfernheide route, spanning from Moabit to Charlottenburg-Nord, remains in the design phase and could become operational by 2029. The 2.9-kilometer Warschauer Straße to Hermannplatz line, located in Friedrichshain to Neukölln, is not anticipated to commence before 2031, pending the completion of the subsequent planning procedure.
Similarly, the Pankow - Weißensee and the M2 extension into the future Blankenburger Süden city quarter in Pankow are still in planning, with operations expected by 2030. The planned new city quarter Elisabeth-Aue in northern Pankow is set to be connected by a new tram line, with the M1 and line 50 scheduled for an end stop in the new quarter.
No timeframe has been given for the new tram line from the Urban Tech Republic, the planned research and industrial park on the former Tegel Airport site, to the town hall in Spandau, as consultations with the district are still ongoing.
Tram Line 62, operating between Hultschiner Damm and Mahlsdorf, already exists, offering stops at S Köpenick and S Mahlsdorf, implying that this route is well-established. However, for other routes such as Turmstraße - Jungfernheide, Warschauer Straße - Hermannplatz, Pankow - Weißensee, Blankenburger Süden extension, Elisabeth-Aue, and Urban Tech Republic to town hall in Spandau, there are currently no specifics available regarding new tram line developments or timelines.
