Railway authorities in India disbursed a total of 60,466 billion rupees as passenger subsidies during the fiscal year 24, as per the government's announcement.
Affordable Rail Travel Remains Priority: Indian Railways Fare Revision
After a gap of more than five years, the Indian Railways has announced a fare revision, effective from July 1, 2023. The move comes as the Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, focuses on enhancing the affordability of rail travel while also working on expanding the rail network and upgrading tracks.
The fare revision sees a marginal increase in fares for various classes of travel, with the rise ranging from half a paisa to two paisa per kilometre. For reserved AC classes, the increase is 2 paisa per km. However, for second class ordinary travel up to 500 km, there is no increase in fare. For distances beyond 500 km, the hike is only half a paisa per km. Sleeper class, ordinary, and first-class ordinary fares have also been increased by half a paisa per km. Non-AC Mail Express classes saw a 1 paisa per km rise.
Despite the marginal increase, the affordability of rail travel remains a priority. The Indian Railways spent a total subsidy of approximately ₹60,466 crore on passenger travel in the financial year 2023-24. This subsidy accounted for about 45% of the actual cost of passenger travel during that period. This level of subsidy reflects significant financial support from the government, making train journeys in India among the most affordable in the world.
The government's commitment to subsidising rail travel has allowed over 720 crore passengers to enjoy affordable travel annually. Less than half the total train journeys will see any fare increase. The Railway Minister has also confirmed that the government has not increased fares for Monthly Season Tickets (MST) and suburban trains.
The recent hike in rail fares was responded to by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who emphasised the need to strike a balance between affordability and operational costs. He also mentioned his plans to increase the frequency of suburban train services wherever feasible and to work on expanding the rail network.
In conclusion, the Indian Railways continues to provide affordable transport to a vast number of passengers, with fares among the lowest globally, even compared to neighbouring countries. The fare revision is a testament to the government's commitment to maintaining this affordability while also working towards improving and expanding rail services.
