Railway appoints a new executive.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder has announced a change at the top of Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway company. The current CEO, Richard Lutz, has been at the helm since 2017, but his tenure is set to come to an end prematurely.

In a recent meeting with Werner Gatzer, the chairman of the supervisory board of DB AG, Schnieder and Gatzer agreed on Lutz's early contract termination. Lutz's contract was originally set to run until 2027, but the exact timeline for his departure has not been officially announced.

Schnieder expressed confidence that Lutz will continue to give his all for the rail in the remaining weeks. He also took the opportunity to thank Dr. Lutz for his great commitment. Lutz, in turn, confirmed that he will continue in his role until a successor is appointed.

The search for the right candidate to succeed Lutz is ongoing, and it is expected to take longer than initially anticipated. The potential successor has not yet been named. Schnieder emphasized that thoroughness and care are prioritized over speed in the selection process.

Once the new CEO is appointed, they will be tasked with implementing the strategy outlined in Schnieder's "Agenda for satisfied customers on the rails", which the minister plans to present on September 22. This agenda aims to improve the overall customer experience on Deutsche Bahn's trains.

Werner Gatzer, the chairman of the supervisory board, has initiated a selection process for the new CEO. Once the right candidate is found, the selection will be followed by the preparation of corresponding resolutions for the supervisory board.

In a statement, Schnieder hinted that ideally, a new Bahn chief should be presented on September 22, the same day as the "Agenda for satisfied customers on the rails" is unveiled. However, he also emphasized that finding the right person for the job is more important than meeting a specific deadline.

The change at the top of Deutsche Bahn is seen as both structural and personal. Schnieder stated that the strategy has reached its basic outlines, and the focus is now on finding the right person to implement it. The change is expected to mark a new era for Germany's national railway company.
