The Hamburg-Berlin railway line will be fully closed from August 1, 2025, until April 30, 2026, for a comprehensive renovation. This 278-kilometre main line closure affects both passenger and freight traffic, with around 470 trains per day impacted during the nine-month period.

Deutsche Bahn, the German railway company, plans to renew over 180 km of track and about 200 switches during the closure. Six new grade-separated junctions will be constructed to improve traffic flow, especially to facilitate overtaking slower freight trains.

The renovation also includes the modernization of signaling and safety systems, including the installation of new signal boxes and upgrading 28 traffic control stations along the route. The project is divided into three construction sections: Hamburg–Büchen, Büchen–Dergenthin, and Dergenthin–Berlin.

Branch lines connected to the main corridor, such as Mölln–Büchen–Lauenburg (Elbe), Hagenow Stadt–Hagenow Land–Schwerin Süd–Ludwigslust, Ludwigslust–Parchim, Wittenberge–Perleberg–Osterburg, and Kyritz–Neustadt/Dosse, will also be affected.

To mitigate travel disruption, long-distance services between Hamburg and Berlin will be rerouted via Stendal and Uelzen to maintain connectivity. Trains towards Rostock and Stralsund will be diverted via Lübeck. Regional rail traffic will be replaced by a comprehensive bus replacement service with more than 170 buses deployed. Real-time travel updates and departure boards will be available through DB Navigator, bahn.de, and regional transit apps.

The closure is part of a long-term infrastructure upgrade anticipated to improve overall efficiency and reliability on this crucial German route. However, the project has also faced criticism for rising costs and planning issues.

This closure will likely impact travel plans for many people, and it is advisable to plan ahead and check for updates on the DB Navigator or bahn.de websites or through regional transit apps.
