Rail Line Between Dresden and Leipzig Shuts Down Completely; Bus Services to Function Temporarily during Closure

The Dresden-Leipzig rail line is undergoing significant upgrades, with the aim of allowing trains to travel at speeds up to 200 km/h, reducing journey times between the cities to under an hour. As of late July 2025, these improvements are well underway, but temporary disruptions continue to affect travel.

One of the key milestones in this project is the completion of the Zeithain-Leckwitz section, which marks an important step towards the continuous high-speed line. As of now, the line enhancement, including track connection, has been completed, but a fixed operational date for this section without restrictions has yet to be announced publicly. The works are part of a larger project to fully modernize and expand rail capacity and safety systems.

The current phase involves connecting the section to control and safety technology, causing temporary rerouting of long-distance trains and replacement bus services on some segments. From July 25 to 28, long-distance trains are rerouted, and local service departure times are adjusted due to these works.

In addition to the Zeithain-Leckwitz section, other parts of the Saxony-Franconia Main Line are also scheduled for upgrades from August 8 to October 26, 2025, but these do not specifically mention the Zeithain-Leckwitz segment.

The renewal of tracks and overhead lines, the implementation of modern control technology, and the elimination of two level crossings by building bridges are the main focuses of the project. Passengers of RE15, RE18, and RB31 must switch to replacement traffic due to closures on July 25th to 26th in the Priestewitz-Coswig section.

While the exact date for the full operation of the Zeithain-Leckwitz section remains uncertain, the ultimate goal is to provide a continuous high-speed rail service that will significantly reduce travel times for long-distance and regional trains.
