CDU proposes reducing electricity tax, offering substantial savings on heat pump incentives - Promoting Heat Pumps While Cutting Electricity Tax - CDU's Plan for Tax Reduction in Electricity Sector

The Cold War is brewing in the Union faction over the federal government's failure to follow through on their promise to cut electricity taxes for consumers. Tilman Kuban, a CDU economist, riled up the crowd in stern, asserting, "Broken promises should never be the government's style!" He demands that the Parliament intervene to rectify the Finance Ministry's unsavory oversight.

Initially, the reduction of electricity taxes for everyone was a promise. That promise, however, no longer finds a place in the new budget draft presented by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD). Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) rationalized the volte-face during the Industry Day, saying that "reality can sometimes slap you in the face."

Heat Pumps: The Hidden Savior CDU Seeks

In the coalition agreement, the federal government had indeed announced a reduction in electricity taxes to the European minimum. However, this reduction will now only apply to industries, not consumers.

CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann shares the same sentiments, contending that the reduction in electricity taxes for everyone must take place. His argument is anchored in the intended compensation for the CO2 price, and he perceives the government as holding back financially.

Given that reducing electricity prices for everyone could decrease the need for heat pump subsidies, Kuban projects that the government could allocate the missing five billion for tax relief and still promote Germany's transition toward green energy.

Consumer Relief in the Face of Narrowed Options

Despite the missing electricity tax reduction, electricity prices for consumers are expected to reduce in the upcoming year due to diminishing gas storage surcharges and network charges. According to calculations by the comparison portal Verivox, a reduction in electricity taxes would further lighten the load by around 2 cents per kilowatt-hour.

A family with an annual consumption of 4000 kilowatt-hours would, with the aforementioned reduction, save roughly €93 per year.

  1. The CDU, led by Tilman Kuban, is urging the Parliament to address the Commission's communication on the future of the European Union, focusing on the issue of an electricity tax reduction for consumers, as promised in the coalition agreement, to enhance trust and competitiveness in both the business and politics spheres, forming a part of the general-news discourse.
  2. In the ongoing debate over the electricity tax, CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann argues that the initial promise of reducing electricity taxes to European minimum, despite being limited only to industries in the new budget draft, should still be implemented to relieve consumers, thereby reducing the financial burden on them and aiding the energy transition, which is crucial for finance and business implications, as well as being a matter of general news interest.
