Portugal's central banking institution, Bank of Portugal, proceeds with construction of its new headquarters.
The Banco de Portugal (BdP) is set to move into a new headquarters in Lisbon by the end of 2027, marking a significant step in the construction of the bank's new premises.
According to recent reports, the expected completion date for the new BdP headquarters is around the last quarter of 2027. This timeline aligns with ongoing developments in Lisbon's financial district, as the completion of comparable large banking infrastructure projects, such as Banco BPI’s office, is scheduled for June 2025.
The Banco de Portugal itself will own the property, as it is the central bank of Portugal and typically holds ownership of its headquarters. The bank's representatives, along with the board of directors of Fidelidade, the current owner of the property, were present at a symbolic ceremony of laying the first stone for the future BdP headquarters on June 24, 202x.
The new headquarters will span approximately 32,000 square meters and will consolidate all office services currently spread across four locations in Lisbon into a single building. The sale price for the new BdP headquarters was reportedly around 192 million euros, with the promissory purchase and sale agreement signed on May 2, 202x.
The construction start date for the new BdP headquarters is yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to begin at the end of July. Excavation and peripheral containment works for the new headquarters are also expected to be completed.
The event was led by Mário Centeno, the current governor of the central bank, who participated in the ceremony. Representatives from the bank and the property owner, Fidelidade, were also in attendance.
Once completed, the new BdP headquarters will be located in the capital, further solidifying Lisbon's status as a hub for financial institutions. The construction of the new headquarters is expected to contribute to the city's ongoing development and growth.
