PM Modi Inaugurates Navi Mumbai International Airport, Set to Ease Congestion
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in India's aviation and infrastructure development. The airport, developed at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, is set to ease air traffic congestion and serve as a key gateway to western India.
From the first day of service, NMIA will handle both domestic and international flights. On its launch day, around 50-60 flights, including arrivals and departures, are expected to operate at the new airport. While specific airlines for the opening day have not been announced, NMIA is poised to become a major player in the region.
The airport is designed to handle 10 million passengers annually initially, with the capacity to expand to 30 million passengers in the future. It is equipped with advanced facilities, including a 4,000-meter-long runway and state-of-the-art technology. NMIA will begin commercial operations at Terminal 1 in December, with airline websites and travel portals adding an 'NMI' booking option ahead of its operational launch.
The existing Mumbai airport, currently operating under the IATA code 'BOM', will continue to function alongside NMIA. The inauguration of NMIA is expected to boost connectivity, enhance passenger experience, and stimulate economic growth in the region. This new airport is indeed a landmark achievement in India's ongoing efforts to strengthen its aviation infrastructure.
