The youthful combination of Tyrese Maxey, Quentin Grimes, and Jared McCain offers the Philadelphia 76ers optimism for future seasons, despite potential changes involving Joel Embiid and Paul George.

Philadelphia's Point Guard Duo Provides Major Optimism for the Sixers' Future

The Sixers enter the 2024-25 NBA season with lofty aspirations, but their campaign has been marred by a series of injuries to key players. Their roster is decimated, and by the time the May 12 draft lottery rolls around, they might be left praying to the gods of ping-pong balls.

Star center Joel Embiid played just 19 games before being sidelined due to a lingering knee injury. His recovery plan remains unclear, but reports suggest he may travel to Germany for platelet-rich plasma treatment, similar to what Kobe Bryant once underwent[1].

Paul George, signed as a free agent the previous offseason, also had a disappointing debut. He suffered two knee hyperextensions, injured his pinkie finger in January, and has struggled with groin soreness. Consequently, the Sixers announced that George has received injections to both his left adductor muscle and knee, effectively ending his 2024-25 season after just 41 games[1].

Tyrese Maxey, another young guard with promise, has also dealt with injuries this season. An early-season hamstring injury kept him out for six games, and his latest issue is a finger injury that forced him to shoot with three fingers. However, head coach Nick Nurse expects Maxey to return before the end of the season[1].

Injuries have taken a toll on the Sixers, leaving nearly 96% of their payroll on the sidelines. But they retain an electric backcourt with Maxey, rookie Jared McCain, and restricted-free-agent-to-be Quentin Grimes providing hope for the future.

Maxey has already established himself as one of the league's most promising young guards, earning an All-Star nod and most improved player award last season. Despite the injuries and increased responsibility, he averaged a career-high 26.3 points per game this season[1].

McCain's season was cut short by a meniscus tear in mid-December. However, team president Daryl Morey believes the pairing of McCain and Maxey can be viable, even though their smaller stature creates defensive challenges[1].

The Sixers acquired Grimes ahead of the trade deadline, hoping that he could provide primary defensive matchups in the backcourt. In his first 16 games with the team, he averaged 19.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.5 threes, and 1.5 steals per game[1].

Grimes had his best game yet in Monday's loss to the Houston Rockets, scoring 46 points, pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds, dishing out four assists, recording two steals, and blocking one shot[1].

The Brooklyn Nets, the only team projected to have more than $30 million in cap space this offseason, could pose a threat to stealing Grimes away from the Sixers. The Sixers will have to decide between retaining Grimes and re-signing Guerschon Yabusele and Kelly Oubre Jr[1].

With so much uncertainty surrounding Embiid and George, the Sixers could find a new direction by re-signing Grimes to play alongside Maxey and McCain long-term. Pivoting to become a backcourt-oriented team might help Embiid and George regain their form in more limited roles, focusing more on defense and less on carrying the offensive load[5].
