OpenAI & Stripe Launch Agentic Commerce Protocol for AI-Driven Shopping

OpenAI and Stripe have collaborated to develop the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard designed to integrate AI agents into the shopping journey. Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about AI's role in e-commerce, particularly regarding errors and fraud prevention.

ACP, maintained by OpenAI and Stripe, aims to empower merchants to retain control over customer relationships and existing payment systems while benefiting from AI-driven commerce. It follows Google's introduction of the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), which supports agentic AI and multiple payment types.

In recent developments, AI chat platforms have started offering direct purchasing options. ChatGPT's U.S. users can now buy products from Etsy and Shopify using Apple Pay, Google Pay, Stripe, or credit cards. Similarly, Perplexity's Pro subscribers can pay directly within its chat using PayPal or Venmo.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol, along with Google's AP2, signals a shift towards AI-driven e-commerce. As AI agents become more prevalent in shopping journeys, it's crucial to address concerns about errors and fraud. OpenAI and Stripe's collaboration on ACP is a step towards integrating AI into commerce while ensuring merchants maintain control over their customer relationships.
