Open Event Scheduled on 29th January: Collaborative Webinar Hosted by LF Energy and Department of Energy & Transportation for Sharing EV Charging Infrastructure Blueprints
The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Standards have set a deadline for EV chargers to conform to the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 2.0.1 by February 28, 2024. To expedite this transition, LF Energy has partnered with the U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation to build an open-source reference implementation for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
This collaborative development model, offered by open source and the neutral governance structure provided by LF Energy, is expected to speed the adoption of electric vehicles and the decarbonization of transportation in the United States. The federal government is also contributing to this effort by deploying code into the open-source project, known as the EVerest project.
EVerest covers major industry standards such as ISO 15118-20, in addition to OCPP, and aims to accelerate development and deployment, increase customizability for different use cases, offer long-term maintainability, avoid vendor-lock in while enabling a commercial support ecosystem, and ensure high levels of security.
The EVerest project by LF Energy will develop and maintain an open-source software stack for energy communications across charging stations, vehicles, generation resources, batteries, adjacent chargers, power grids, backend payment systems, user interfaces, and mobile devices. LF Energy EVerest is an open-source modular framework for EV charging, licensed under Apache 2.0.
The EVerest project, originally initiated by PIONIX GmbH and contributed to LF Energy in early 2022, consists of multiple modules, configurable and customizable for various use cases. It offers flexible logic to connect various standards. The Joint Office will dedicate resources to improving the EVerest project, including coordination, community engagement, and software code.
Dr. K. Shankari, who serves as principal software architect for the standards and reliability program at the Joint Office, has been appointed to the EVerest Technical Steering Committee.
A webinar discussing the LF Energy-Joint Office collaboration and involvement opportunities will be held on January 29 at 10 am US Eastern. Free registration for the webinar is now open. This partnership aims to reduce instances of incompatibility that result from proprietary systems and make charging more reliable for electric vehicle drivers. Charger manufacturers are urged to consider a standardized reference implementation that is OCPP 2.0.1 compatible such as EVerest.
While details about a potential webinar with representatives of the Joint Office and the LF Energy community were not explicitly listed in the available search results, it is recommended to check the latest updates for more information.
