Private Uranium Enrichment Facility to be Built at Former Paducah Site

After a hiatus of over a decade, uranium enrichment is set to return to the former Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Western Kentucky. The privately-funded nuclear fuel enrichment facility, backed by venture capital including Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, has officially kicked off with a lease signing on August 5, 2025.

The 100-acre federal land at the site will be used for setting up the facility by General Matter Inc. The Department of Energy (DOE) of the United States has leased this plot of land for a new private-sector domestic uranium enrichment facility.

The project marks the return of uranium enrichment to the site, with construction planned to begin in 2026 and uranium enrichment operations projected to start between 2030 and 2034. This initiative is noteworthy as the first U.S. privately-funded uranium enrichment initiative since the closure of the gaseous diffusion plant in 2013.

The facility will use next-generation uranium enrichment technology, recognized by DOE enrichment programs, operating under strict safety and environmental regulations overseen by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The project is expected to bring 140 high-paying jobs and a significant economic boost to the region.

The DOE Office of Environmental Management Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Roger Jarrell, stated that leveraging the resources of the former Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant will fast-track commercial licensing activities. Jarrell added that President Donald Trump's administration's commitment to reducing barriers to American energy development is enabling the Office of Environmental Management to transform liabilities into opportunities.

The uranium enrichment facility will help ensure a continuous supply of uranium hexafluoride feed suitable for reenrichment for General Matter. The lease agreement provides General Matter with a minimum of 7,600 cylinders of existing uranium hexafluoride to supply fuel for future reenrichment operations. The reprocessing of uranium hexafluoride will save American taxpayers approximately $800 million in avoided disposal costs.

General Matter is an important component in the fuel-line development and rebuilding America’s nuclear fuel production base. The facility is at an early stage with broad plans and timelines established for construction and startup within the next decade.

The Trump-led administration is pushing for the removal of its reliance on Russia and other states for nuclear fuel. Building domestic supply chains for nuclear fuel is critical to the reshoring and domestic expansion of energy for advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence data centers, as per the DOE.

Several new nuclear reactor projects and small modular reactors are being developed in the US to cut the country’s reliance on fossil fuels for energy needs. The privately-funded uranium enrichment facility at Paducah is a significant step towards achieving this goal.

The site itself has undergone extensive cleanup under DOE Environmental Management since the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant’s closure in 2013. The project has strong local and state support, including involvement of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and several U.S. Senators and Congress members at the announcement event.
