Northern Ireland Unveils New 'Intermediate Rent' Affordable Housing Policy
Northern Ireland's Department for Communities has unveiled a new affordable housing policy, focusing on 'Intermediate Rent' homes. This scheme is part of a wider strategy to boost affordable housing supply and access.
The Intermediate Rent policy aims to tackle barriers like tenancy insecurity, lack of support services, and high rents. It offers private rented tenancies with the same rights and obligations as standard private tenancies, but with rents at least 20% below local market rates. Homes provided under this scheme must meet specific design and finish standards, with responsive maintenance services.
The policy targets low to moderate income households, providing more security, support, and benefits than open market private rented tenancies. It also contributes to affordable housing delivery through Local Development Plans. Work is currently underway to secure a funding package for the practical delivery of new Intermediate Rent homes.
The Intermediate Rent policy, introduced by Northern Ireland's Department for Communities, is set to create additional affordable rental homes. This initiative, part of a broader affordable housing strategy, is expected to provide more secure and supportive housing options for low to moderate income households.
