Nordstrom sales significantly drop for Ivanka Trump's brand
In a move that has sparked controversy, department store chain Nordstrom announced on Monday, February 13, 2017, that it would be discontinuing the sale of Ivanka Trump's apparel. The decision was made in response to declining sales and customer feedback, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
The election took place on Nov. 8, but the sales drops were reportedly occurring weeks before Donald Trump became president. The Wall Street Journal reported that sales of Ivanka Trump's products were more than 70 percent lower in the second, third, and fourth week of October compared to the same weeks the previous year.
Nordstrom spokeswoman Tara Darrow stated that the company did not share specific sales results numbers related to Ivanka Trump's brand or any other brand. The report did not specify the reasons for the sales drops.
President Trump defended Ivanka Trump on Twitter after Nordstrom's decision, stating that she is a 'very LEGENDARY' businessperson who has been treated unfairly by Nordstrom.
The House of Representatives Oversight committee, led by Jason Chaffetz, has shown support for Ivanka Trump's business. However, Republican Jason Chaffetz asked the Office of Government Ethics to review comments made by White House advisor Kellyanne Conway urging people to buy Ivanka Trump's products on television, as they were accused of violating ethics rules.
Nordstrom's sales of Ivanka Trump's clothing and shoes for the fiscal year ending in January 2017 were $14.3 million, a decrease from $20.9 million in the previous year. The sharp sales drops were cited in the report as coming from internal Nordstrom data.
At the time of this report, no specific companies that still sell Ivanka Trump's brand were mentioned. Other members of the administration have expressed support for Ivanka Trump's business, but it remains to be seen how this decision by Nordstrom will impact the brand moving forward.
