New infestation of wood-boring beetles discovered in forests of Krasnoyarsk Krai

In the vast expanse of Krasnoyarsk Krai, a fresh wave of the menacing Ussurian beetle (Ussurian polygraphus) has been detected in Bol'shomuratino forestry. This little critter is no friend to pines, mercilessly obliterating them from their roots.

After a collaborative surveillance of the quarantine phytosanitary state of forest lands, involving Verhnekazansky and Krasklyuchinsky district forestry offices, specialists from Bol'shomuratino forestry and the Kransoyarsk branch of the federal phytosanitary service,this new scourge was discovered.

This treacherous pest poses a grave threat to pine plantations. A mass spread of the beetle could lead to the total elimination of pine forests over large swathes of land.

Unfortunately, there are no remedies for this pest - the most effective strategy to combat it involves chopping down infected, deceased, and recently colonized trees.

While chemical and biological methods have shown limited effectiveness, promoting natural predators or the use of entomopathogenic fungi could be promising avenues for future control.

Let's not forget the destruction it wrought upon the Siberian firs at Stolby.

To prevent further propagation of the beetle and to contain and eradicate its population, the boundaries of the quarantine phytosanitary zone have been corrected based on a Roszheldozhnadzor order.

The revised phytosanitary zone encompasses the following territories:

  • In Verhnekazansky district forestry: forest plots 92-97, 123-132, 152-162;
  • In Krasklyuchinsky district forestry: forest plots 16-28, 41-53, 55-65;
  • In Mostovsky district forestry: forest plots 5, 6, 12-22.

The total area of the phytosanitary zone amounts to 63,680 hectares.

For companies conducting business within the phytosanitary zone, a mandatory program for controlling the beetle outbreak and its population has been established. When transporting timber from quarantine zones, it is mandatory to obtain certificates.

Keep in mind that the Ussurian beetle is not only a threat to trees but also to local biodiversity and the overall ecosystem, making its eradication an urgent matter. The timber industry and the authorities must work together to protect these valuable pine forests. Fellow Krasnoyarsk residents, let's each do our part to monitor and report any sightings of this destructive pest in our surroundings. Together, we can protect our beloved pine forests and ensure a prosperous future for all.

News about the Ussurian beetle outbreak in Krasnoyarsk Krai has raised concerns in the scientific community, particularly within environmental science and medical-conditions related to respiratory conditions, as the destruction of pine forests could impact the health of the local population and the environment. Climate change, which is increasingly causing shifts in insect populations and their behavior, potentially contributes to the spread of such pests.

The Ussurian beetle, a grave threat to pine forests, has been identified within a revised quarantine phytosanitary zone encompassing several districts in Krasnoyarsk Krai. Industrial activities, including the timber industry, must adhere to a mandatory program for controlling the beetle outbreak and acquire certificates for transporting timber from quarantine zones.

The financial costs associated with combating the Ussurian beetle and preserving the pine forests are significant, as the eradication of this pest is an urgent matter for the health of the local population, the preservation of biodiversity, and maintaining a sustainable energy supply from wood sources.

Ultimately, the cooperation between industry, environmental-science experts, and local authorities is crucial in controlling this destructive pest and preserving the valuable pine forests of Krasnoyarsk Krai for future generations. As residents, each of us plays a role in monitoring and reporting any sightings of the Ussurian beetle, contributing to its eradication and the protection of our environment.
