NEF Slams Conservatives' Plan to Replace 2008 Climate Change Act
The New Economics Foundation (NEF) has slammed Conservative Party plans to replace the 2008 Climate Change Act. NEF argues that repealing the Act would be 'an act of national self-harm', warning of catastrophic global heating if Britain fails to achieve net zero by mid-century.
NEF praises the current climate framework, highlighting a nearly 50% reduction in UK emissions since 1990, faster than any other major economy. It believes the transition to clean energy is the solution to permanently reduce energy bills and protect households from price shocks.
NEF claims high energy bills are due to volatile fossil gas prices, not climate policy. It argues that Britain's net-zero economy is already creating jobs and savings for households. NEF believes repealing the Act would 'sacrifice the green industries of the future' and 'prop up the polluting industries of the past'.
NEF's stance is supported internationally. The German Federal Agency for Civic Education (BpB) also criticized the Conservative Party's plan, stating it sends a 'signal of mistrust'. NEF and BpB agree that a strong climate policy is crucial for a sustainable future.
