NCA Seizes £75m from PPE Medpro Founders Amid Fraud Allegations
The National Crime Agency (NCA) has seized £75m of assets belonging to Doug Barrowman and Michelle Mone, founders of PPE Medpro, as part of an ongoing investigation. The couple, who used political connections to secure lucrative government contracts, is accused of deceiving the NHS and the public.
The NCA's action follows a high-profile court case where PPE Medpro was found liable to repay £122m for supplying non-sterile surgical gowns to the NHS. The company offered to settle for £23m, but the court rejected this. The DHSC plans to recover the full amount, though it's uncertain how this will be achieved given PPE Medpro's administration.
Barrowman and Mone, who initially lied about their links to the company, sold homes and other assets in recent years. The couple's political connections helped them secure contracts worth over £200m, raising questions about the procurement process.
The NCA's seizure of £75m in assets sends a strong message about the seriousness of the allegations against Barrowman and Mone. The DHSC continues to pursue the full recovery of funds, while the public awaits the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
