Moscow's Mayor, Sobianin, reveals expansion plans for a new metro line within the city
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has announced plans for a new metro line in the city, with the potential to improve transport connections near the Skolkovo innovation hub and the Mozhaisk district.
The proposed metro line is set to run adjacent to the Mozhaisk district, located in the west of Moscow, and may provide an alternative route to the Belovezhsky Pond, currently accessible via the "Setun" station of the Moscow Central Diameter, a half-hour walk away.
While the exact route specifics beyond "from Skolkovo running next to Mozhaisk district" have not been detailed, this project forms part of broader urban development efforts in the Mozhaisk district, including improved infrastructure and landscaping.
The construction of this new metro line is currently under consideration by city authorities, and as of August 2025, no construction start dates have been publicly disclosed. This project is likely linked to the ongoing expansion of Moscow’s metro network, including the Large Circle Line which is now operating nearby.
Elsewhere in Moscow, several metro line construction projects are already underway. The "Dostoevskaya" station on the Koltsevaya line is currently being built, and seven stations are being constructed simultaneously on the Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya line, including "Zvenigorodskaya", "Serebryany Bor", and "Rublyovo-Arkhangelskoye".
A total of 16 metro stations are currently under construction in Moscow, with extensive work being carried out on the Troitskaya, Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya, Biryulyovskaya, and Koltsevaya lines. Three stations are being constructed on the Biryulyovskaya line, including "Ostrov Mechty" and "Klenovy Bulvar", with the first tunnel boring starting on June 18.
Preparations for the "Golyanovo" station on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line are also underway, and seven more stations on the Biryulyovskaya line are in the design phase. Six more stations from "Sosny" to "Troyitsk" are being prepared on the Troitskaya line, while four stations ("ZIL", "Krymskaya", "Akademicheskaya", and "Vavilovskaya") are being built on the Troitskaya line.
The proposed metro line towards Skolkovo will run along the Skolkovo Highway, suggesting the metro line aims to improve transit connectivity between Skolkovo and Moscow’s western districts. The ongoing urban development around Skolkovo and the Mozhaisk district, including new highways, schools, medical facilities, and recreational spaces, indicates an integrated urban planning strategy complementary to the new metro infrastructure.
No further details on technical, financial, or timeline specifics for the metro line were found in the current search results. As construction plans progress, updates on the project are expected to be announced.
