Mooncakes Go Green: Companies Embrace Carbon Neutrality This Mid-Autumn Festival

This Mid-Autumn Festival, mooncakes are going green. Companies are embracing carbon neutrality, with some even offering verified, low-carbon options. Zhenggu and Envision Group have launched carbon-neutral mooncakes, a trend gaining traction globally.

A single Zhenggu organic mooncake (60g) emits approximately 160 grams of carbon. A box of nine, a common purchase, emits around 1,440 grams. To tackle this, companies are optimizing energy use, utilizing clean energy sources, and opting for recyclable or biodegradable packaging. The challenge lies in accurately calculating a mooncake's energy footprint, which involves addressing its entire lifecycle, from ingredient sourcing to transportation.

Chinese food corporations like Changzhou Sinomilk and Alibaba's Ele.me are at the forefront of this movement. They measure and verify energy footprints through lifecycle assessments, source sustainable ingredients, optimize energy consumption, and purchase carbon offsets to achieve neutrality. Despite the complexity, companies are committed to making mooncakes a sustainable treat.

Energy neutrality is transforming mooncake production. While challenges persist, companies are innovating to reduce emissions. From sustainable ingredients to clean energy and carbon offsets, mooncakes are becoming a greener delight. This Mid-Autumn Festival, consumers can enjoy their favorite treats knowing they're part of a sustainable future.
