Moving Mountains: The A45 Motorway's Gigantic Construction Project on Hold - The Colossal A45 Rinsdorf Viaduct XL Delayed
colossal A45 Bridge relocation initiated - monumental undertaking commences - Monumental relocation of A45-bridge initiated - Large-scale endeavor commences
Hey there! Here's a juicy update about a mind-blowing construction project that's currently causing quite a stir on the A45 motorway in Rinsdorf, Siegerland.
A gargantuan 40,000-ton bridge segment, complete with columns, is gradually being maneuvered sideways along the A45, a first in Germany on this scale. The Autobahn GmbH refers to this as a groundbreaking method, and they're right! Since crack 'o dawn, this massive valley bridge colossus on the Sauerland line, including its substructure and 70-meter high pillars, has been inching centimeter by centimeter.
This behemoth of a bridge will soon dock to the second, completed segment—a distance of exactly 20 meters and 59 centimeters. During this nail-biting lateral shift, traffic continues to flow on the second segment. This gargantuan structure, over 400 meters long, is expected to take up to 30 hours to move at a snail's pace.
Tons of work had to be done before the shift
Before the shift, extensive preparations were required. The six bridge pillars were raised by two centimeters, and Teflon plates were inserted to act as a sliding cushion, allowing the bridge to glide along like on rails.
Remember the old Rinsdorf bridge from the 60s? It bit the dust about three years back. Before that, they had to build a new one alongside it. The completed steel and concrete segment, including the massive concrete pillars, is now being moved as close as possible to this new one.
For maximum safety, a slew of safety measures was put in place, emphasizing Elfriede Sauerwein-Braksiek, director of the Westfalen branch. A host of renowned civil engineering experts have been involved since day one in this jaw-dropping XL project.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Autobahn GmbH will update us on the project's progress.

Stay tuned for more updates on this epic construction project!
In light of the innovative groundbreaking method used for the A45 Rinsdorf Viaduct XL, a symbol of progress in German infrastructure development, the Community policy should prioritize funding for vocational training in engineering and construction to foster a skilled workforce for the industry. Given the complexity of this project and its use of advanced technology, it's essential to secure sufficient financial resources for continued success and future projects.
