Germany's Job Market: A Mixed Picture in Q2 2025

The German job market has shown a mixed performance in the second quarter of 2025, with some sectors experiencing growth while others face challenges, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office.

In a significant development, the total number of employed people in Germany remained almost unchanged, with around 46.0 million people employed from April to June. However, this is a slight increase of approximately 10,000 more people compared to the same quarter last year.

The German job market is working around 14.4 billion hours in the three months, a figure that reflects the combined efforts of the workforce. Despite this, the average working hours per employee decreased by 0.5 percent to 315.4 hours.

Unfortunately, the trade, transport, and hospitality sector saw job losses, decreasing by 38,000 (minus 0.4%). The industry and construction sectors also experienced job losses, with a decrease of 21,000 employed people in construction (minus 0.8%). The information and communication sector saw a decrease of 4,000 employees.

On a positive note, the employment in public services, health, and education continues a long-term upward trend (1.9%). There is also an increase in the area of other services, including financial and insurance services (1.8%).

The overall employment picture is a reflection of the economy's contraction by 0.3% in Q2 2025 due to weak investment and exports. However, the labor market remains tight with high demand for technical, administrative, and maintenance roles.

Key growth areas include healthcare (high-paying medical professions), IT management and software architecture, and engineering management. Fields like international business, AI, and sustainable development also show promise, indicating evolving job market trends influenced by technological advancement and green initiatives.

However, the unemployment rate in Germany has risen to almost three million, a concerning figure that underscores the challenges faced by certain sectors. The source of the information is ntv.de and raf/dpa.

In conclusion, while the German job market has shown resilience and recovery since the Corona crisis, the current situation presents a mixed picture. The focus for policymakers and businesses should be on supporting the sectors facing challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities presented by the growth areas.
