Marketing and business advisor, Patty Sangmor, aiding small enterprises in their growth and expansion
A New Chapter for Patty Sangmor: From Fashion Hustle to Business Coach
In 2020, Patty Sangmor traded her Marketing Strategist gig at a top Ghanaian agency for a shot at molding small businesses into sustainable powerhouses. Initially, she planned to focus on her fashion side project while putting her marketing expertise to work for SMEs in the future. But upon lockdowns and canceled events, she seized her long-term ambition.
Armored with lessons from a business growth workshop, marketing agency experience, and university coursework, Patty ventured into SME business coaching and consulting. She found many Ghanaian SMEs struggling with running their operations and reaching consumers, a challenge she aimed to alleviate. So far, she's assisted over 3,000 brands and helped them scale.
Reflecting on the journey, Patty noted several insights, including the importance of squashing self-doubt and prioritizing the right guidance when starting a business. "Few people will support you at first," she cautioned. "But don't let that deter you. Keep working, and the people who need you will rally around you."
Her entrepreneurial journey came with financial hiccups, especially during the initial months with no revenue, but Patty remained resolute: "I saw someone thriving in this line of work from an African country. I knew it would work; I just needed time."
The Landscape of Business Coaching in Ghana
Ghana's economy boasts a burgeoning SME market, driven by government support and initiatives. However, obstacles like limited financial resources, inadequate infrastructure, and skills gaps impede SME growth. A growing demand for efficient and strategic consulting services provides a ripe opportunity for skilled business coaches like Patty.
As the digital age progresses, incorporating technology into consulting could allow more accessible and efficient services, while specialization in specific sectors like digital marketing or sustainable business practices may cater to unique client needs.
Building partnerships and capacity-building programs focusing on SME owner and manager skills could further strengthen the consulting market in Ghana.
