Marbella's Local Government Boosts Social Support and Commercial Development
Marbella, Spain, is set to undergo a significant transformation with the expansion and renovation of the La Canada shopping centre, covering an additional 20,000 square metres. This commercial development project, backed by a €12.07 million private investment, is not the only focus for the Local Government Board.
The council has prioritised supporting local organisations, viewing them as a vital network for protecting Marbella's most vulnerable residents. To this end, €400,000 has been allocated for social initiatives in the 2025 budget. This funding forms part of a broader €1.7 million social funding plan for the year, which also supports key programs like the Red Cross and Food Security Programme.
Eight partnerships with local associations and organisations, including AFA Marbella, Marbella Voluntaria, Bastiano Bergese, Cáritas, Afimar, Crece, Cudeca, and Global Gift, will receive €260,000. Additionally, a €150,000 competitive grant programme has been approved, with ten submitted projects currently under evaluation.
The funded projects aim to address essential needs for children, women, the elderly, people with dependencies, and those with rare diseases. The council meeting that approved these developments also predicted that they would generate enough taxes to cover the donations to local associations.
The Local Government Board of Marbella finances its social donations and initiatives through public budget allocations set aside for social causes, independently from private business investments like that for La Cañada shopping centre expansion. This approach ensures that the needs of Marbella's community are met while also promoting commercial development.
