Major disruption experienced by CommBank customers results in apology from the bank following a significant outage.

On September 20, 2022, the Commonwealth Bank (CommBank) experienced an unexpected outage, causing disruption to several banking services. The outage was due to scheduled maintenance that took longer than anticipated.

CommBank notified its customers about the maintenance and the potential for limited or unavailable services via its website and banking app. During the outage, services such as NetBank, phone banking, Travel Money card top-ups, international money transfers, and app payments were affected. However, merchant EFTPOS terminals and online payments remained available, albeit with lower limits for CommBank debit cards.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the bank apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their patience. They advised customers to stay vigilant against potential scams during the outage, urging them not to click on links in emails or texts, not to share their PIN or passwords, and to report any suspicious activity to the bank.

The maintenance work was completed at 10:25 a.m. AEST on September 20, and all CommBank banking services became available once more. Scheduled payments and merchant settlement payments may have been processed after the maintenance window.

It's worth noting that, on the same day, Erste Bank Sparkasse also conducted planned maintenance, leading to customers being unable to access services or transfer money from 22:00 on September 20 until 18:00 on September 21.

In conclusion, while the outage caused some inconvenience to CommBank customers, the bank has apologised and urged customers to remain vigilant against potential scams during such periods. Regular updates and notifications are crucial to keep customers informed during maintenance windows.
