Major Boiler Makers Warn of Price Hikes Amidst 'Boiler Tax' and Heat Pump Targets
Four major boiler manufacturers, Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, and Baxi, have warned consumers about potential price increases due to penalties for not meeting heat pump sales targets. This comes amidst a £120 rise in boiler installation costs, dubbed the 'boiler tax', and calls for a government probe into 'unjustified' price hikes.
The current prices for new gas condensing boilers range from approximately €2,400 to €3,400 per unit, depending on the model and output. Lord Callanan has clarified that there is no 'boiler tax', but rather the Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM) to encourage heat pump installations by 2028.
Boiler companies have blamed the CHMM for the recent £120 increase in installation costs. However, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Claire Coutinho, has accused these companies of 'unjustified price hikes' and has called for an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority. The home heating market has been accused of spreading anti-heat pump propaganda to protect its own interests, previously advocating for hydrogen heating instead.
With fuel poverty on the rise due to spiralling energy prices, the CHMM mandates that 4% of heating manufacturers' sales should be from heat pumps, with fines for non-compliance. The government probe aims to ensure fair competition and protect homeowners' interests amidst the transition to greener heating solutions.
