Madrid Manager Ancelotti Discusses Controversy Surrounding Alvarez's Penalty Decision Again
The Mayhem Surrounding Alvarez's Penalty and Real Madrid's Upcoming Clash with Villarreal
Carlo Ancelotti, the head honcho at Real Madrid, keeps fielding questions about the contentious penalty kick amidst the Champions League dustup involving Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez. After Madrid's 1-0 loss to Atleti during regular time in a second leg tie at the Metropolitano, extra time and penalties were necessary. Despite Los Blancos triumphing in the shootout 4-2 to set up a quarterfinal showdown against Arsenal, the Alvarez penalty debacle has sparked a wave of controversy.
The controversy stems from the doubt surrounding whether Alvarez double-touched his penalty, which was initially ruled out by VAR. Ancelotti has been questioned about the incident on multiple occasions, including during the media brouhaha ahead of Real Madrid's La Liga encounter with Villarreal.
"Honestly, I've not been paying attention to this 'hubbub'," Ancelotti admitted. "We've moved on from that game. We're focusing on the upcoming match against Villarreal now. Over the upcoming period, we've got a series of matches lined up, and we're eager to deliver good performances," he continued.
When asked if he would advocate for a rule change, Ancelotti conceded, " frankly, I'm not sure what would warrant a rule alteration in the first place." He added, "However, the rules are the rules, and it's important to adhere to them."
When asked about Real Madrid's imminent fixtures, Ancelotti took a firm stance. "I must confess, I just don't get it. But there's nothing we can do about it. The schedule remains unchanged," he said, expressing his frustration.
Ancelotti brushed off speculation of other factors influencing the tight scheduling, which has been fuelled by the ongoing spat between his club and La Liga president Javier Tebas[1].
However, the stressful season has taken a toll on Ancelotti, who voiced his frustration about the constant cycle of matches. "This season has been relentless. Since January, we've barely had a moment's rest, with matches coming thick and fast. The upcoming clash with Villarreal could mark our 21st or 22nd game. It's simply too much. Even for a coach like me who doesn't step onto the pitch, being in constant preparation for matches is exhausting. The players barely have time to recuperate. Yet, what can be done? The only option is to halt the play," Ancelotti concluded, acknowledging the challenges facing the team.

Carlo Ancelotti, having moved past the controversy surrounding Julian Alvarez's penalty in the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid, has prioritized the upcoming kickoff against Villarreal in La Liga on his calendar. Ancelotti has admitted that the tight scheduling of matches since January, which may lead to as many as 22 games, is a considerable stress factor for both him and the team, expressing a desire for a break from the constant cycle of games. Despite the challenges, he has focused on delivering good performances in upcoming matches, including the one against Villarreal. Despite the ongoing spat between Real Madrid and La Liga president Javier Tebas, Ancelotti has not advocated for any rule changes regarding penalty calls in the Champions League.
