Luxurious Gold Coin Made with Diamonds Expected to Sell for Over $4 Million in Upcoming Auction

Rachel Cormack, a digital editor at the website, reports on an extraordinary event in the world of numismatics. The Crown Coin, a once-in-history tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, is set to be auctioned at Stanley Gibbons Baldwin in London and online on September 25.

This unique coin, crafted to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee in 2022, is a testament to the global reach and unifying effect of the late monarch. The creation of the Crown Coin took over 2,800 hours and involved more than 80 artisans and master jewelers from eight countries.

The front side of the coin showcases a two-pound gold coin surrounded by 10 one-ounce coins bearing the official portraits of the late queen and designs representing her six virtues. The diamonds for the Crown Coin were cut and polished in Australia, South Africa, and Canada, and certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the U.S. The reverse side of the coin features the Union Jack rendered in diamonds.

The Crown Coin, made of 3.61 kilograms of pure 24-karat gold and 6,426 diamonds totaling almost 484 carats, is widely considered one of the world's most valuable coins. If it hammers down for anywhere close to its estimated value of £21 million, it will set a new world record.

The Crown Coin is being compared to some of the most celebrated creations in numismatic history, including the legendary 1,000 Tola Gold Mohur of Mughal Emperor Jahangir and great commemorative works of European royalty. This rare coin is a fitting tribute to a reign that will never be equalled.

The coin, last valued at £16 million in 2022, has a pre-sale estimate of £2 million to £3 million. The auction for the Crown Coin will take place live at Stanley Gibbons Baldwin's flagship in London and online on September 25.
