Lufthansa Faces Major Strike by Pilots Over Pensions
Lufthansa faces a potential strike by pilots, which could significantly disrupt air traffic and passenger travel in the coming weeks. The strike, supported by a clear majority of pilots, is over occupational pensions and could lead to widespread flight cancellations and delays.
The dispute centers around Lufthansa's plans to outsource short and medium-haul flights to subsidiaries, a move that has angered pilot unions. Pilots, represented by the Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft (ver.di) and other unions like GDBA and UFO, are demanding an increase in the employer's contribution to their aqi. Around 90% of Lufthansa pilots and 95% of Lufthansa Cargo pilots voted in favor of the strike, with participation rates at 88% and 96% respectively. In the past, similar strikes have led to near-complete program cancellations. Union demands include preserving and improving existing pension schemes, ensuring adequate retirement income, involving employees in decision-making processes, increasing transparency in pension fund management, and adjusting pension rules to reflect current economic and demographic trends.
Lufthansa pilots are preparing for a strike that could significantly impact air traffic and passenger travel. The core issue is occupational pensions, with pilots demanding an increase in the employer's contribution. Passengers should expect flight cancellations and delays if the strike goes ahead.
