Ludwigsburg in Disarray: Economic Foundations Insufficient

HB Ludwigsburg, a German handball club, has failed to secure funding for the 2025/26 Women's Bundesliga season and has initiated insolvency proceedings. This decision has led to the club's withdrawal from competitions, including the upcoming 2025 Handball Super Cup.

The German Handball League (DHB) announced that initiating insolvency proceedings according to § 8b of the league's statutes would result in a deduction of eight bonus points at the end of the regular season for HB Ludwigsburg. This penalty could potentially impact the club's standing in the league.

The financial struggles of HB Ludwigsburg have been ongoing, and despite their best efforts, the board has been unable to find a solution to bridge the financial gap. The existing financial gap has not been closed since the initiation of the provisional insolvency proceedings.

As a result, the Women's Handball Bundesliga (HBF) has formally excluded Ludwigsburg from the current season, reducing the league to eleven teams. Thüringer HC has replaced HB Ludwigsburg in the 2025 Handball Super Cup scheduled for August 23, 2025.

The team's players are no longer contractually bound due to the insolvency. Dr. Holger Leichtle, the provisional insolvency administrator, stated that it is not reasonable for the players to remain bound by their contracts under the current conditions. The players have also been informed of the decision to continue the project on a smaller scale with reduced financial resources.

The board is now reviewing the continuation of the project on a smaller scale, but the outcome of the insolvency proceedings is still uncertain. The future of HB Ludwigsburg in professional women's handball is under review, and the club retains its past German championship titles despite the financial collapse.

HB Ludwigsburg relocated to Ludwigsburg last year, and prior to this, the club was known as SG BBM Bietigheim. The club won the championship and the cup under their new name in the previous season, marking a significant achievement for the team.

In summary, HB Ludwigsburg is currently not participating in the 2025/26 Bundesliga season following insolvency, and their status beyond this season depends on the outcomes of insolvency proceedings and potential restructuring. The club's financial struggles have left a significant impact on the Women's Handball Bundesliga, and the future of HB Ludwigsburg remains uncertain.
