MANILA'S RICE GAME CHANGE 🍚

Get ready, Manila folks! Prepare for rice prices to drop like a sack of potatoes, 'cause the Department of Agriculture (DA) has some game-changing moves up their sleeves!

Beginning July 1, the DA will be lowering the maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) for 5% broken imported rice from PHP45/kg to PHP43/kg. But that's not all! The King of Rice, Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., has his eyes set on further price drops for Rice for All (RFA) varieties next month!

So, what can we expect? Well, you might see a PHP1 to PHP2 drop in retail rice prices, according to the Secretary. That's right! Get ready for your jugs of rice to get lighter in your wallet. 💸

Discussions about RFA adjusted amounts are happening next week. The aim? To provide consumers with cheaper rice while ensuring farmers get a reasonable profit. Currently, the DA's RFA5, RFA25, and RFA100 are priced at PHP43/kg, PHP35/kg, and PHP33/kg, respectively. But don't worry, they're not acting like penny-pinching scrooges. They'll still be selling premium rice with a profit, just at a cheaper price than regular retailer prices.

As of June 11, the prices of imported commercial rice in Metro Manila ranged from PHP39.83 to PHP58.65 per kilo. In comparison, some local rice types come in at price points up to PHP60/kg! But with the DA's new moves, it's looking like those prices might see a significant drop. 📉

The Decline in rice prices could potentially impact Manila's industry and finance sectors, given rice's integral role in the country's economy.
