BECO Capital, in collaboration with multiple global investors, has facilitated over USD 15 million in funding for Cairo-based investment platform Thndr. This investment was part of a wider USD 15.7 million funding round, masterminded by Prosus Ventures, the venture capital arm of global technology company Prosus.
The MENA law firm Matouk Bassiouny acted as advisors to BECO Capital on its investment in Thndr. The funding round marks the second round raised by the platform, with additional participation from The Rabacap Partnership, Endeavor Catalyst, JIMCO Capital, Y Combinator, a US university endowment, and other international investors.
Led by Mohamed Essam, who heads the firm's corporate and mergers and acquisitions UAE offices and its emerging companies and venture capital group, the Matouk Bassiouny team provided essential counsel during the funding process. Senior associate Moustafa Rizk also contributed to the effort.
Founded in 2020 by Ahmad Hammouda and Seif Amr, Thndr offers users access to various investment instruments such as gold, domestic and US stocks, savings products, and mutual funds. The platform eliminates account minimums and commission fees, making investing accessible to a wider audience.
With the recent funding, Thndr aims to replicate its Egyptian success across the broader region, focusing on building locally relevant, trusted investment platforms. The primary objectives include strengthening operations in the UAE and preparing for entry into the Saudi Arabian market.
Thndr CEO Ahmad Hammouda expressed his vision: "Our mission is to offer access to local, regional, and international investment products through a single wallet and account, making investing as seamless and inclusive as possible. With only 2% of individuals in MENA investing, now is the time to establish the region's leading investment-first money app - a platform that empowers people to build wealth, make informed decisions, and live their lives on their own terms."
Van Campen Liem, a Dutch-based legal team specializing in corporate and tax law, provided legal guidance to Thndr during the funding round.
The Enrichment Data suggests that Thndr has seen rapid growth since its inception in 2020, with over a million users onboarded, more than 15 million investment orders worth EGP 170 billion, and approximately 80% of its users being first-time investors. As the platform continues to grow, it is well-positioned to democratize access to financial markets in the Middle East, potentially expanding its offerings and services to cater to the specific needs of emerging markets while increasing financial literacy.
- The investment rounded facilitated by BECO Capital, involving multiple global investors, will significantly bolster Thndr's finance division.
- Thndr, with its accessible investment platform, aims to leverage the recent financing to expand across the broader region and build trustworthy, region-specific investment platforms, eventually democratizing access to financial markets in the Middle East.
