Lawsuit Alleges 'Abuse of Power' Against Shohei Ohtani and CAA in $240M Hawaii Development
A lawsuit has been filed against baseball star Shohei Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo of CAA Baseball, alleging 'abuse of power' and 'unjust enrichment' in a $240 million luxury housing development on Hawaii's Hapuna Coast. The complaint, initially filed by a Hawaii real estate investor and broker, was later amended to include Creative Artists Agency and CAA Sports as defendants.
The development, valued at $240 million, is situated on the coveted Hapuna Coast of the Big Island. Lawyers for the plaintiffs claim that Ohtani and Balelo interfered with the project, leading to tortious interference and unjust enrichment. The complaint alleges that Balelo demanded the termination of the plaintiffs in retaliation for resisting constant demands from the defendants.
Lawyers for Ohtani and Balelo counter that the plaintiffs exploited Ohtani's name and photograph to promote their own side project development. However, the complaint states that the defendants calculated that removing the plaintiffs would allow them to extract financial concessions from the project, enriching themselves at the plaintiffs' expense. The majority owner of the joint project, Kingsbarn Realty Capital, remains unidentified according to search results.
The amended complaint, filed on September 14, 2023, seeks damages and injunctive relief. The case is ongoing, with both sides presenting differing accounts of the events leading to the lawsuit.
