A series of disruptions have hit rail services in the Bamberg region of Germany following a fire in a pedestrian underpass below the railway track in Hirschaid. The incident, reported early on a Friday morning by a witness, has caused significant damage to the structure of the underpass, making it impossible for trains to pass above it.

The Nuremberg-Bamberg railway line has been partially closed as a result, with high-speed trains in both directions between Nuremberg and Erfurt being diverted. This has led to delays of approximately 90 minutes and stops not being made in Erlangen and Bamberg. Some Intercity (IC) trains between Nuremberg and Leipzig (via Jena) and between Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Gera have also been cancelled due to the closure and diversion of trains.

The Bamberger Kriminalpolizei is investigating the fire, which involved wooden slats and pallets. While the cause of the fire is yet to be officially determined, the investigation is focusing on the possibility of deliberate action, with the incident currently being treated as a potential arson case.

Meanwhile, the Deutsche Bahn (DB) is working to restore the service. Temporary bridges are being considered to resume train traffic on the Berlin-Munich track, which has also been closed due to the fire. Until July 12, the high-speed track is also closed between Erfurt and Leipzig/Halle due to bridge renovation work. Trains are being diverted via Weimar and Naumburg, adding another half hour to the journey time.

The fire has disrupted travel plans for many, with journey times increasing by about 90 minutes and half an hour, respectively, due to the delays, cancellations, and diversions. The DB advises passengers to check their journey status regularly and to plan accordingly.
