In an unexpected turn of events, a fire in a train tunnel near Bamberg has forced the closure of the high-speed ICE route between Berlin and Munich. The blaze, which occurred in the early hours of last Friday, was initially reported by a witness and promptly attended to by around 20 firefighters who extinguished wooden planks and pallets that had caught fire.

The affected section of the route between Nuremberg and Bamberg remains closed at least until mid-week, causing disruptions to train services. As a result, high-speed trains between Nuremberg and Erfurt in both directions are being rerouted, leading to delays of approximately 90 minutes. Stops in Erlangen and Bamberg are not being served due to these reroutes.

To mitigate the impact of the closure, Deutsche Bahn is planning to install emergency bridges to resume train traffic on the Berlin-Munich route. In the meantime, trains will be rerouted via Weimar and Naumburg, adding an additional half hour to the journey time. A replacement bus service has been set up between Forchheim and Bamberg due to the train line closure.

The Bamberg Criminal Police are investigating suspicions of arson in connection with the train tunnel fire. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have been caused negligently, but no definitive conclusions have been reached. It is important to note that no indications have been found that the fire was set with the intention of disrupting traffic.

Some IC trains between Nuremberg and Leipzig (via Jena) and between Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Gera have been cancelled as a result of the incident. The structure above the tunnel sustained severe damage due to the fire, making it impossible to use the tracks.

It is crucial to emphasise that for precise and up-to-date details on the arson investigation and estimated reopening time for the ICE route between Berlin and Munich, it is recommended to consult official sources such as Deutsche Bahn announcements, German transport authorities, or recent news reports directly covering this incident.

In a separate development, it has been announced that the high-speed route between Munich and Berlin will also be closed between Erfurt and Leipzig/Halle for bridge renovation work until July 12. This closure is unrelated to the fire incident and will not further impact the services affected by the train tunnel fire near Bamberg.

The closure of the high-speed ICE route between Berlin and Munich due to a train tunnel fire near Bamberg has led to investigations by the Bamberg Criminal Police, suspecting negligence as the cause. Finance and general news outlets are covering the potential arson case, while Deutsche Bahn makes arrangements to mitigate the disruptions, such as installing emergency bridges and rerouting trains. Additionally, some car-accidents have been reported on the replacement bus service between Forchheim and Bamberg due to the train line closure. Crime and justice, transportation, and industry sectors are all affected by these events.
