"Label Services Gain Ground: A Look at the Customized Contracts Shaping the Music Industry"

In the August 2025 edition of Music Week, a special report spotlights the booming artist and label services sector, highlighting the key factors driving its growth and success.

According to industry experts, the rise of independent artists and the "Age of the Artist" is a significant factor. With increased access to self-distribution tools and digital platforms, unsigned artists are the fastest-growing segment of the music economy. Mark Mulligan, an industry analyst, terms the 2020s as "The Age of the Artist," reflecting a fundamental shift towards artist empowerment beyond traditional label models. However, labels remain crucial for artists with global ambitions, offering services and scale not easily replicated independently.

Innovation in creator tools, live streaming, and direct monetization of fan bases is another key driver. Platforms that enable artists to monetize superfans through subscriptions, limited-edition merch, and exclusive content are gaining importance, reflecting a move away from relying purely on streaming revenue.

Strategic reinvestment by labels is also a significant factor. After disruptions caused by file sharing and digital transformation, labels are reinvesting streaming revenue gains into artist development and A&R, resulting in increased signing of new artists. This shows a cycle of growth with labels adapting to modern dynamics while supporting artist growth.

The sector also benefits from the adoption of AI and technological advancements that streamline production, promotion, and audience engagement. AI tools and ghost production services provide artists with comprehensive music creation and marketing solutions, enhancing quality and market responsiveness.

With streaming growth slowing and ticket prices rising, direct-to-superfan monetization has become a pivotal growth driver for artists and labels. Building sustainable careers increasingly depends on owning and engaging a dedicated fan base that generates meaningful revenue through diversified channels rather than broader mass reach.

TikTok launched SoundOn, an all-in-one platform for music marketing and distribution, in 2022. Suitable for artists with a primary audience on TikTok or those looking to grow their audience on the platform, SoundOn has made chart impacts with tracks like Pink Lemonade (Str8 Reload) by LeoStayTrill & Mr Reload It, Abracadabra by Wes Nelson feat. Craig David, and Show Me Love by WizTheMC and Bees & Honey.

Other players in the sector include The Orchard UK, a Music Week Award winner with clients such as Big Brother Recordings, The Other Songs Records, Boy Better Know, Xtra Mile Recordings, Blossoms, Jack Savoretti, and Raye. !K7, an independent music company home to imprints such as !K7 Records, Strut, and 7K!, and partners with labels including International Anthem, David Byrne's Luaka Bop in New York, and Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section, was acquired by Create Music Group in April this year.

Believe, a Paris-based global digital music firm, works with labels such as Fabric Records, Rinse Hospital Records, Bella Union, Young Poet, CR2 Records, and Mahogany Records, alongside artists including Mura Masa, Grace Davies, Potter Payper, Rhys Lewis, Craig David, and Strandz.

Virgin Music Group, owned by Downtown, works with artists such as Beabadoobee, Tom Odell, Clairo, Underworld, The Kooks, Van Morrison, Richard Ashcroft, and St Vincent. Fuga, also owned by Downtown, and Downtown Artist & Label Services have clients including Insomniac, Naxos, Better Noise, Marathon Artists, Mascot, Armada, Nina Nesbitt, and André Rieu.

Jasmine Bodkin, VP label management at The Orchard UK (Sony-backed business), believes clear, strong, and consistent communication is essential to optimize reach and influence in a congested market. Nichal Sethi states that whatever the nature of the partnership, the artists and labels will always remain in control of their art. Bosåen stresses that trust, relationship, and communication are crucial for success in the industry.

Roo Currier, UK general manager of IDOL, a digital distributor, highlights that some acts are seeking more control over their budgets, release schedule, and artistic direction. Liz Northeast, Fuga's SVP, EMEA, stated that as an artist and label services partner, they are here to add value that clients may not be able to find on their own, such as global teams, creative services, deep data, and cutting-edge technology.

In conclusion, the artist and label services sector is thriving, offering independent artists the tools and support they need to succeed in the "Age of the Artist." With a focus on innovation, artist empowerment, and direct fan monetization, the sector presents a complex but opportunity-rich environment for growth and success.

  1. Finance plays a crucial role in the artist and label services sector, as strategic reinvestment by labels into artist development and A&R drives the signing of new artists, and platforms that enable artists to monetize their superfans through subscriptions, merchandise, and exclusive content are becoming increasingly significant.
  2. The business of music is evolving, with entertainment and marketing converging, as shown by the rise of music marketing solutions like TikTok's SoundOn,ai and the increasing emphasis on direct fan monetization. This shift towards artist empowerment beyond traditional label models is marked as "The Age of the Artist."
