Kazakhstan's New Dual Price Tag System to Combat Hidden Surcharges
A novel measure for stores in Kazakhstan aims to protect buyers from hidden surcharges and increase market transparency. The specific authority overseeing this will be determined later. The dual price tag system, currently in pilot testing, is not related to the 'cash versus stripe' practice but aims to make payments clear and transparent.
The dual price tag system will display both the immediate payment price and the total installment amount. This is to prevent sellers from adding extra markup for installment payments, as explained by Svetlana Romanovskaya, chairperson of the Eurasian Consumer Union. Artem Bukhonin, an entrepreneur, clarified that marketplaces will not differentiate between installment or cash payments, with banks profiting accordingly. The current law prohibits setting different prices based on the payment method, making this new system a significant change.
The dual price tag system is designed to help buyers make more conscious decisions about their purchases. It targets hidden surcharges and aims to increase market transparency. The specific authority responsible for overseeing its implementation will be announced later.
